About Murphy
Murphy began in 1846, when the McMillen family arrived from Arkansas with Lydia McMillen's brothers, James and Henry Maxwell. They settled along a branch of what became Maxwell Creek, on land that had been part of the Peters Colony grants. The settlement went by several names, including Maxwell's Creek, Decatur and the Maxwell's Branch post office. In 1888 the St. Louis Southwestern Railroad arrived, and the town took the name Murphy to honor William Murphy, who gave the railroad its right-of-way.
For most of the next century Murphy was a quiet farm town that shipped cotton, corn and onions by rail. By 1970 only about 136 people lived there. The city had incorporated in 1958, and growth picked up in the 1980s as families came for larger lots. As the suburbs of Collin County spread outward, that growth reached Murphy quickly. Today Murphy has about 21,000 residents and is known for its parks, its restored 1938 schoolhouse and the corn-themed Maize Days festival every fall, a nod to its farming past.
